A Life of Learning, Teaching, Building, and Following Christ

David grew up in a military family as the son of a career naval officer. Travel and exposure to different places and cultures became part of life early, creating a curiosity about people, history, ideas, and the larger world.

That interest in seeing and understanding the world has continued throughout his life. David and his wife, Melody, have been married for more than forty-six years and continue to enjoy traveling together. They are the parents of two sons and grandparents of three grandchildren.

Family has increasingly shaped David's understanding of discipleship. Christian truth is not merely something to be learned individually; it is something to be received, lived, taught, and passed from one generation to the next.

For much of his professional life, David was a serial entrepreneur. Building businesses required vision, persistence, problem-solving, leadership, and the willingness to continue learning when circumstances changed.

Retirement did not bring an end to that desire to build. It redirected it.

Increasingly, David's attention turned toward an investment of a different kind: helping people understand Scripture and helping families establish theological foundations capable of being passed to future generations.

That transition from entrepreneurship to biblical education also influences the way he teaches. Theology should be rigorous, but it should not remain trapped in abstraction. Biblical truth is intended to shape how people understand God, themselves, their circumstances, and the lives they actually live.

David's desire for deeper biblical understanding eventually led to formal graduate study in biblical exposition.

He earned a Master of Arts in Biblical Exposition and a Doctor of Philosophy in Bible Exposition from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

His doctoral research concentrated on Paul's remarkable statement in Romans 5:5 that "Hope does not disappoint." His dissertation, Paul's Personification of Hope: A Historical-Rhetorical Approach to Romans 5:5, explored the possibility that Paul's language presents Hope not merely as an abstract expectation concerning the future, but ultimately in personal and Christological terms.

That research became an important influence on David's later writing and teaching. Hope increasingly emerged as more than something the believer possesses. Christian Hope is inseparable from the living Christ Himself.

For more than twenty years, David has taught in community discipleship settings, working particularly with mature believers who want to move beyond surface-level treatments of Scripture.

His teaching frequently places biblical passages within their historical, cultural, canonical, and theological contexts. Particular interests include biblical theology, Pauline studies, Christology, Second Temple Judaism, the historical world surrounding Scripture, spiritual perception, Christian Hope, and the believer's identity and security in Christ.

The purpose, however, is never scholarship for scholarship's sake.

Biblical study should eventually bring the reader back to the text with clearer eyes, deeper understanding, greater confidence in Christ, and a renewed desire to live according to what God has revealed.
