The Beatitudes

Conditions, Position, and the Promises of God’s Kingdom

Matthew 5:1–12·10-Module Series·David V. Lott, Ph.D.

The Beatitudes are among the most familiar teachings of Jesus, yet their meaning is frequently obscured by modern assumptions about happiness, success, suffering, and divine blessing. When Jesus identifies the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the gentle, and the persecuted as blessed, He challenges the assumption that a person's relationship with God can be measured by favorable circumstances.

Central to this study is the Greek adjective makarios, commonly translated blessed. Its significance cannot be reduced to emotional happiness or favorable earthly conditions. Instead, Jesus announces the blessedness of those He describes in relation to God's kingdom and the promises that accompany His declarations. Understanding these words requires careful attention to the historical setting of the Sermon on the Mount, the language of the Greek text, the Old Testament background, and the expectations of His original audience.

Throughout these ten modules, we will examine the distinction between the conditions people experience and the standing they possess before God. We will also consider how the kingdom promises announced by Jesus relate to the completed redemptive work of Christ, while preserving the distinction between the original meaning of Matthew's Gospel and the fuller theological explanation developed in the apostolic writings.

Our purpose is not simply to revisit familiar sayings, but to understand why Jesus calls these people blessed and how His teaching transforms our understanding of life in God's kingdom.
