Ephesians: The Riches of God's Grace and the Life of His Church
God's Eternal Purpose in Christ and the Life of His Church
David V. Lott, Ph.D.
Paul's letter to the Ephesians opens a remarkable window into the eternal purposes of God and the place of the Church within His redemptive plan. Beginning with the spiritual blessings believers possess in Christ, Paul traces the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in salvation, revealing a divine purpose that reaches beyond the circumstances of individual lives and embraces the unity of God's people in Christ. The letter invites readers to understand not merely what God has done for them, but who they have become through their relationship with Jesus Christ.
The movement of Ephesians from theological declaration to practical instruction is essential to understanding its message. Paul's discussion of election, redemption, grace, reconciliation, and the mystery of the Church establishes the foundation for his later exhortations concerning Christian conduct, unity, spiritual maturity, marriage, family, work, and spiritual warfare. These responsibilities are not presented as a means of earning acceptance before God, but as the appropriate expression of a life already transformed by His grace. The believer's position in Christ provides the foundation for the believer's walk in the world.
This expositional study examines Ephesians within its historical, literary, linguistic, and theological setting, giving particular attention to Paul's argument and the relationship between the letter's doctrinal and practical sections. Familiar interpretations are considered in light of the biblical text, with careful distinction between what Paul explicitly teaches and what later theological traditions have inferred. Throughout the study, our objective is to understand the riches of God's grace, the identity and calling of His Church, and the practical significance of living in accordance with the truth revealed in Christ.
