In the Company of Angels

A Biblical Study of Angels and the Unseen Realm

10-Module Teaching Series

Throughout Scripture, angels and other spiritual beings appear at crucial moments in the biblical story, yet their place within that story is often misunderstood or overlooked. This ten-module series examines what Scripture reveals about the angelic realm, spiritual rebellion, the unseen conflict, and the sovereign purposes of God while considering the historical and cultural world in which the biblical writers understood these realities.

Understanding the Unseen Realm

Reading Scripture Within Its Ancient World

Modern readers often approach biblical references to angels, heavenly beings, demons, powers, and principalities as isolated supernatural events. The biblical writers did not. They wrote within a world in which the visible and invisible dimensions of creation were understood as parts of a single reality under the sovereignty of God.

In the Company of Angels approaches these passages by beginning with the biblical text and then examining the historical, linguistic, and cultural setting in which that text was written. Ancient Near Eastern backgrounds, Second Temple Jewish literature, and the development of biblical terminology can illuminate that setting, but they do not replace Scripture or carry its authority.

The purpose is neither to sensationalize the unseen realm nor to dismiss it. It is to understand these passages as their original audiences would have heard them and then ask what their theological truth means for the believer today.

“Respect the words. Understand their world. Establish what the text meant there. Then ask how its truth speaks here.”
— David V. Lott, Ph.D.

The Ten-Module Study

Explore the Series

The study develops progressively. Rather than beginning with speculation about angels, it begins with the biblical world itself and follows the testimony of Scripture as the identity, activity, rebellion, and destiny of spiritual beings become increasingly clear. Each module builds upon the material that precedes it.

01

Introducing the Heavenly Host

The Unseen Creation of God

Scripture reveals a vast unseen creation of personal spiritual beings who worship and serve God within His sovereign purposes. This opening study establishes what the Bible actually teaches about angels—their creation, nature, number, power, limitations, and relationship to humanity—while separating biblical revelation from later tradition and speculation.

02

The Nature and Organization of the Heavenly Host

Order, Rank, Appearance, and Service in the Unseen Realm

The heavenly realm is neither chaotic nor an undifferentiated collection of spiritual beings. This module examines Michael, Gabriel, cherubim, seraphim, heavenly authorities, and the living creatures of Revelation while carefully distinguishing genuine biblical order from speculative attempts to construct a complete hierarchy of heaven.

03

The Heavenly Council and the Government of God

The Sons of God, the Council of the Holy Ones, and Delegated Authority in the Unseen Realm

Scripture sometimes portrays heaven as a royal court in which created spiritual beings serve beneath the incomparable King. Through Job, the Psalms, 1 Kings, Daniel, and other texts, this study examines the heavenly council, the "sons of God," spiritual princes, and delegated authority without compromising the absolute sovereignty of God.

04

Rebellion in the Heavenly Realm

The Origin of Satan, the Mystery of Evil, and the Revolt Against the Government of God

How could rebellion arise within a creation governed by a good and sovereign God? This module examines Satan as a created spiritual adversary, the biblical imagery associated with his rebellion, and the pride, self-exaltation, deception, and desire for autonomous rule that characterize the revolt—while remembering that Satan is never God's equal or opposite.

05

Fallen Angels and Demons

Their Reality, Identity, Nature, Organization, and Place in the Biblical Story

The biblical rebellion involves more than Satan alone. This study examines fallen angels, demons, evil and unclean spirits, their possible relationship to one another, their personal nature and organization, and the limits Scripture places upon their power, always keeping them beneath the sovereign authority of Christ.

06

The Activity of Demons

Deception, Idolatry, Affliction, the Occult, and the Limits of Demonic Power

Scripture neither dismisses demonic activity nor makes demons responsible for every form of evil and suffering. This module examines deception, counterfeit spirituality, idolatry, temptation, affliction, divination, magic, and occult practices while preserving human responsibility and emphasizing the decisive limits God places upon the kingdom of darkness.

07

Demonization and the Believer

Possession, Influence, Indwelling, and the Authority of Christ

What does the New Testament actually mean when it describes people as demonized, and how should Christians understand the difference between temptation, oppression, influence, and possession? This study examines the Gospel accounts and the difficult question of demonic influence upon believers while locating Christian security not in formulas or techniques, but in union with Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Spiritual Warfare

Rulers, Authorities, Strongholds, Prayer, and the Armor of God

Biblical spiritual warfare looks considerably different from many popular portrayals of it. Through Daniel, Paul, and especially Ephesians 6, this module examines rulers and authorities, strongholds, the armor of God, prayer, truth, faith, Scripture, and disputed ideas such as territorial spirits and spiritual mapping, placing the entire conflict beneath Christ's accomplished victory.

09

The Final Defeat of the Powers and the Victory of the Kingdom

Judgment, Resurrection, the Heavenly Host, and the Consummation of God's Rule

The biblical story moves toward an appointed conclusion. This module follows the promise of the serpent's defeat through the cross and resurrection to Christ's return, the judgment of rebellious powers, the resurrection of the dead, the renewal of creation, and the final establishment of God's uncontested rule.

How to Use This Study

For Personal Study, Teaching, and Discipleship

These modules originated in extended classroom teaching and are designed to work at more than one level. Individual readers may work through the series sequentially as a guided biblical study. Teachers and small-group leaders may use individual modules as the foundation for classroom discussion, while churches may use the complete series as an extended discipleship course.

The material intentionally goes beyond a simple catalog of angelic appearances. It asks how the biblical writers understood the unseen realm, how those beliefs developed across the biblical story, and ultimately how the New Testament places every spiritual authority beneath the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

A Word About Sources

Scripture, History, and Second Temple Judaism

This study occasionally draws upon ancient Jewish writings and other historical sources because they help reconstruct the intellectual and religious world surrounding the biblical text. Works associated with Second Temple Judaism can be particularly valuable for understanding concepts and terminology familiar to Jewish readers of the New Testament.

These writings are used as historical witnesses, not as Scripture. Their value lies in helping us hear the biblical text within the world in which it was first proclaimed. The theological authority of the study remains the canonical Scriptures.

Teaching Philosophy

Serious Biblical Study Made Understandable

In the Company of Angels reflects the teaching approach of David V. Lott, Ph.D.: careful attention to the words of Scripture, serious engagement with the historical world of the biblical writers, and clear explanation for readers who want to understand Scripture more deeply.

“My goal is simple: to take serious biblical study and make it understandable without making it shallow.”
— David V. Lott, Ph.D.
