The Revelation of Jesus Christ
Revelation: An Expositional Study
A chapter-by-chapter study of the book of Revelation, tracing its historical setting, Old Testament foundations, theological message, and enduring hope in Jesus Christ.
Two introductions and twenty-two chapter-by-chapter lessons
About This Study
Revelation is not a puzzle to be decoded or a newspaper of the future. It is an unveiling of Jesus Christ — the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, the ruler of the kings of the earth. Its opening words name its subject: the Revelation of Jesus Christ.
This study reads Revelation as it was first received: a prophetic letter addressed to real congregations living under Roman authority in the province of Asia. Its symbols are drawn from the Old Testament, its imagery is shaped by the literary conventions of Jewish apocalyptic writing, and its message was intelligible to its first hearers. We will not import modern geopolitical categories into the text, nor will we dismiss the first-century churches as a mere preface to future events.
Where the text is disputed — where responsible interpreters have reached different conclusions about the timing, identity, or scope of a vision — those disputes will be named rather than passed off as unambiguous biblical statements. The goal is not to settle every eschatological question but to read the book faithfully, historically, and canonically.
“Respect the words. Understand their world. Establish what the text meant there. Then ask how its truth speaks here.”
— David V. Lott, Ph.D.
The series culminates in Revelation 22:4 — the promise that the redeemed will see God’s face. That is the theological destination of the entire book, and it is the horizon toward which every lesson moves.
