James: The Evidence of Living Faith

An Expositional Study of James 1:1–5:20

The letter of James is intensely practical, but its practicality should not be mistaken for a collection of disconnected moral instructions. James is examining what happens when genuine faith enters the circumstances of ordinary life. He places faith under pressure and asks what becomes visible when trials arrive, temptation exposes our desires, Scripture confronts us, relationships test our values, words reveal the heart, ambitions compete for control, suffering demands endurance, and fellow believers need our care.

Throughout the letter, the central concern remains remarkably consistent: living faith does not remain merely a profession. Because it is alive, it increasingly becomes visible in the life of the believer. This study follows that argument through the entire letter and asks James's searching question of us: What does the faith we profess look like when it begins to govern the way we live?

THE STUDY

Introduction

James: The Evidence of Living Faith

James 1:1–5:20

An introduction to the letter of James, its author, audience, and the central theological argument that genuine faith becomes visible in the life of the believer.

Module 1

Faith Under Pressure: Trials, Temptation, and the Word

James 1:1–27

James opens by placing faith immediately under pressure. Trials test and mature faith; temptation exposes the desires of the heart; and the Word of God, received and obeyed, is the instrument through which genuine faith is formed and revealed.

Module 2

Faith Without Partiality: When Relationships Reveal the Heart

James 2:1–13

James turns to the community of faith and exposes how partiality — the preferential treatment of the wealthy over the poor — contradicts the royal law of love and reveals a faith that has not yet taken hold of the values of the kingdom.

Module 3

Faith That Works: The Inseparability of Faith and Action

James 2:14–26

In one of the most examined passages in the New Testament, James argues that a faith which produces no visible evidence in action is not genuine faith. Abraham and Rahab illustrate that living faith has always been a faith that acts.

Module 4

Faith and the Tongue: When Words Reveal the Heart

James 3:1–12

James examines the tongue as a window into the heart. The inability to control speech is evidence of a heart not yet fully governed by faith; growing mastery of the tongue is evidence of spiritual maturity.

Module 5

Wisdom from Above: When Ambition Meets Humility

James 3:13–4:10

James contrasts earthly wisdom — marked by selfish ambition, disorder, and conflict — with the wisdom from above, which is pure, peaceable, and gentle. The path from conflict to peace runs through humility and submission to God.

Module 6

The Tongue: When the Heart Speaks

James 3:1–12

Speech functions as a window into the heart, and growing control of the tongue is evidence of spiritual maturity. This module examines the power and danger of words and the transformation that genuine faith produces in how we speak.

Module 7

Living Faith: When Belief Becomes a Life

James 3:13–5:20

The concluding movement of James follows the letter through wisdom, selfish ambition, conflict, submission to God, judgment, planning, wealth, suffering, patience, prayer, confession, restoration, and the final evidence of a life increasingly governed by faith.
